Introduction of the Society
On 9 June 1934, the non-profit organisation Société de l’Ordre de Léopold was founded under the chairmanship of the then Prime Minister. It was established in response to the wish of His Majesty King Albert I to see the formation of a mutual aid society amongst recipients of the Order of Leopold, so that the most disadvantaged among them might benefit from a sustainable institution capable of coming to their aid in times of difficulty.
Material assistance is provided to recipients of the Order who, finding themselves temporarily in need, apply for it. This may take the form of a support grant, an interest-free loan of honour, a death grant or higher education scholarships awarded to deserving children of members. Similarly, the Society provides financial support to orphans – under the age of 18 – whose parent died in the line of duty and was posthumously decorated in the Order of Leopold. The current statutes also allow for charitable initiatives to be undertaken for the benefit of civil society.
Moral support is provided through the organisation of regular meetings in the form of lectures – which are also open to non-members – organised outings or trips, and visits to members who are isolated or in hospital.
The objectives pursued are rooted in a deep attachment to our country and our dynasty. Consequently, the Society of the Order of Leopold is represented at patriotic events.
